Copy and Paste mp3's directly into your ipod without using itunes

rebuild_db

See what's new or get it at SourceForge.
Overview

This little program enables iPod shuffle users to finally get rid of all that iTunes or other complicated playlist management stuff. Due to the simple structure of the shuffle (compared to the »big« iPods), it is possible to use the player almost like any other USB flash MP3 player: You simply copy MP3 files onto it. You only need to run the rebuild_db program after you added or removed files from the iPod. This approach hasnumerous benefits:

You don't need iTunes, ml_ipod or GNUpod anymore. Simply copy some MP3 files into the iPod volume and start this teensy 8k program.
You aren't restricted to store your music in the /iPod_Control/Music subdirectory. Build your own directory and filename structure. Your iPod, your rules!
You may use the iPod on as many computers as you want.
The actual iTunes database is left untouched, your iPod should still work with iTunes, if you like. (Note that this wasn't true for me; my iTunes installation now refuses any co-operation with my iPod. But I'm pretty sure that this is due to my experimentation with the iTunes database, and not a side-effect of using rebuild_db.)
If you do not use the iPod_Control folder for your music, iTunes will not delete your files again without asking.
rebuild_db uses a quite sophisticated shuffle algorithm (»smart shuffle«) that arranges your tracks in a more uniform way.
Supported Platforms

rebuild_db comes in two flavors: A platform-independent python script, and a plain C Win32 console application.

The script requires some recent version of Python (tested with versions 2.2 through 2.4) and should work on any platform Python supports. This includes Linux, Windows, MacOS X and a large amount of other Unix-like systems.

The Win32 version is made for Windows users (obviously), and requires no additional installed software to work. Please note that it is not supported any longer and lacks many features. However, you may continue to use it if you don't need all the cool stuff like smart shuffle or custom rules.

Usage

Windows users should install Python first, because (as stated above) the Windows native version is now unsupported. Users of other operating systems (including Mac OS X) are likely to have Python installed by default.

First, initialize your iPod with iTunes (that is, give it a name, and enable its usage as a mass storage device). This is needed because the iPod shuffle, despite not really using the iTunes database, is checking for its presence. You do not need to copy any tracks to the iPod; just make sure that a hidden subdirectory with the name »iPod_Control« appears in the root directory of the iPod volume. You may even delete the iPod_Control/Music directory afterwards. If this does not work for you (e.g. because you don't have access to a computer that runs iTunes), you may also try this dump of my own iPod_Control directory.

Second, put your favorite MP3 files onto the iPod. Give them the names you like and arrange them in directories as you like. Only make sure that the names are not too long. (The total path length may not exceed 256 characters.)

Third, put rebuild_db.py into the iPod's root directory and start it. A double-click should do; if not, you have to open a terminal yourself and chdir to the iPod's root directory (i.e. the drive letter on Windows or /Volumes/NameOfYourIPod on Mac OS X) and start the script manually with `python rebuild_db.py'. The program will scan the iPod volume for playable files. It also creates file called rebuild_db.log.txt that contains the program's output messages. If you don't find error messages there, everything should be OK.

Finally, disconnect your iPod shuffle. Of course, you should do this safely, e.g. using the »safe removal of devices« icon in the Windows system tray, the Finder's eject button, or umount on Linux/BSD. You may now have some fun listening to your music :) If you want to add more music later (or delete other tracks that got too boring ;), go back to step 2.

If this is too confusing for you and you are a Mac OS X user, you may want to read the following (less technical, but slightly outdated) description written by a contributor.

Make a file of the size you want.

Making A file of the size you want

How to make a file of the size you want ?
Let us assume you want to make a file of size 10000kb
Convert it to bytes -> 10000*1024 which comes out to be 10240000 bytes

Open calculator (win key+r -> type in calc )
Choose view mode to be Scientific
one
Type in 10240000 and convert it to hex it comes out to be 9C4000
Convert this value to 8 digits by padding zeroes to its left -> so finally it comes out be 009C4000

Open Command Prompt
(win key + r -> type in cmd )
Type DEBUG filename.dat
it'll show file not found error ,ignore it
Type RCX -> Enter -> then last four hexadecimal numbers i.e. 4000 ->Enter
Type RBX -> Enter -> then first four hexadecimal numbers i.e. 009C->Enter
Type W ->Enter
Type Q ->Enter

W stands for write and Q for quit

Now check the file you just made by dir command ->dir filename.dat

Using the same technique you can make files as big as you want

Here is an image to show how exactly everything can be done

Another simpler method by Prash2488

try this command on cmd
fsutil file createnew [path]{e.g.:-F:new foldervirus.txt} [SizeInBytes]then press enter:

Gossip: Sania Mirza dating a Telugu actor

Sania Mirza who seems to have a soft corner for actors (Akshay Kumar, Shahid Kapur) is now very friendly with Telugu actor Navdeep Pallapolu.

He’s supposed to be pretty hot in Hyderabad, her city and from what our source tells, he was involved in a controversy some years ago.

His heroine Ankitha had consumed sleeping pills during a shoot with Navdeep in Mauritius. He had used some nasty lingo which she didn’t like.. but of course Navdeep said that was just not in his upbringing and his side of the story hadn’t been heard.

Must hear when I go over to Hyderabad pearl shopping.

Sania likes this kiddo, according to our super sources. Whatever happened to Shahid Kapur?

Big-Heroine Loves To Act With Naga Chaitanya

The voluptuous beauty Anushka who has been wowing the audience with her oomph factor and sweet looks has become the most sought after in the industry. It is known news that she has a strong equation with the Akkineni household given the number of movies that she has done and the buzz that she is close to one of the members there.

He is none other than Naga Chaitanya, better known as the son of Nagarjuna and now he is all set to make his debut as a hero. Grapevine also said for sometime that Anushka was introduced to Nagarjuna by Naga Chaintanya himself. There is a talk that is on the rope saying Anushka may be placed in one of the forth coming ventures of Naga Chaitanya. It is true that Anushka loves to act with that young hero from big legacy.

If this happens, then she might just be another Sridevi in the making having acted with father and son. It could go a bit further if Raghavendra Rao remembers the interesting request that ANR made during a public meet that he would want to pair with Anushka and shake a leg with her.

Rosaiah's Retort To Chiranjeevi

Finance Minister Rosaiah has given a retort to Chiranjeevi today. It is known fact that Chiranjeevi has been showing his disgust on present and previous governments and today said that corruption turned rampant in the state by the negligence of all the governments.

Reacting to this Rosaiah said today, "Chiranjeevi should come to conclusion only after roaming entire state. He should stop making baseless comments on the present government and its development and welfare activities. He has no experience or proper observation to comment on intelligence system in the state as well. He has been saying that everyone should become Tagores to put a check for corruption. But every body will not find producers as Chiranjeevi found all these years".

Chiranjeevi started his state wide tour only a few days back and so far he covered only Sreekakulam and Vizianagaram.

2. C. Ravi: Victory Venkatesh who has come with his latest release has paired up with the gorgeous Anushka and the mesmerizing Mamata Mohandas. Directed by Yogi, the film has a typical Venky type of comedy and has been attracting the family audience a great deal. The movie sits in position-2 of this week.

3. Asta Chemma: A film with small investment and high returns, this movie has stood as the perfect example for quality in content and presentation. The movie sits in position-5 of this week.

Rajnikanth: Nobody can pressurize me

Chennai: Tamil superstar Rajnikant tonight said nobody could pressurise or compel him to plunge into politics in the wake of some of his fans in Coimbatore floating a political party. Warning action against the fans at Coimbatore who floated Desiya Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam recently, Rajnikant, in a statement said "nobody can pressurise or compel me to enter politics. But if I take a decision to enter politics, nobody can prevent it".

He said his fans were free to join any party of their choice and if he decided to enter politics, they were free to join him.

His fans, enthused by the entry of film stars into politics in Tamil Nadu and in a neighbouring state, wanted him to enter politics, he said apparently referring to Vijaykant and Saratkumar in Tamil Nadu and Chiranjeevi in Andhra Pradesh.

"I am totally involved in the production of ''Endiran'' (his latest movie under production directed by Shankar). My fans are free to join any party of their choice but I will not allow them to float a party in a name, a flag or use my photograph", he said.

He instructed his fans associations to expel those, who announced the formation of a political party. - Agencies

A wednesday review

Rating: 4/5
An edge-of-the-seat thriller
Anjum Rizvi, UTV Motion Pictures & A Friday Filmworks
Naseruddin Shah. Anupam Kher, Jimmy Shergill, Aamir Bashir & Deepal Shaw
Sanjoy Chowdhary

Irshad Kamil
Fuwad Khan
Story - Screenplay - direction: Neeraj Pandey
Producer: Ronnie Screwvala, Anjum Rizvi & Shital Bhatia
Release date: 5 September 2008

Story

Prakash Rathod (Anupam Kher) is the commissioner of police for the Mumbai city. He gets a call from a stranger that he has planted bombs in various cities and they will be trigged off at 5 pm if Prakash Rathod does not release four of the most dangerous terrorists. Prakash Rathod alerts his team and makes arrangement to release the terrorists and at the same time he tries to trace the stranger. The rest of the story is all about whether Prakash Rathod finds who the stranger is or not.

Actors:
Naseeruddin Shah did the role of an old man with terrific knowledge about computers and networking. He is extremely good. Anupam Kher is exceptional as the chief cop. Jimmy Shergil is cool as the hot-blooded cop. Deepal Shaw is alright as the news-hungry reporter.

Technical departments:

Story - Screenplay - direction: Story of the film has an interesting premise. Screenplay is extraordinary. Director is very good at story telling. He made sure that you are at the edge of your seat all the time. The narration of the film is smooth, seamless and engrossing. He told a serious story in an entertaining way by sprinkling a bit of humor at regular intervals. The following scenes are good

1. The scene in which police commissioner gets the CM to give all powers to him in order to negotiate with the stranger.
2. The rowdy pissing in pants and telling the truth the moment he sees Arif Khan.
3. The scene in which director dupes us into thinking that Arif Khan catches hold of the stranger on the top of the under-construction building (a similar screenplay technique was used in ‘The silence of the Lambs’ where the director dupes us to think that heroine surrounds the house of the killer)
4. The way the stranger sips coffee and eats sandwich while negotiating with the police force.
5. The final twist when terrorists are taken to Juhu air-strip.
6. The scene in which the stranger reveals the cause behind his act.
7. The terrific encounter between the two in the last scene

Technical departments: Dialogues in the film goes perfectly well with the script. Cinematography is excellent. Background music is pretty good. Editing is crisp.

Analysis: Whenever we see films getting dragged in the second half for no reason, we end up thinking why the Indian filmmakers stick to 2 and half hour or 3 hour runtime to narrate a story. Here comes the answer from the debutant director Neeraj Pandey who made this film with 1 and half hour duration. Another reason that amuses us in Indian films is the poor and unrealistic usage of computers and technology. This film shows the realistic and convincing usage of computers. ‘A Wednesday’ is a film that breaks from many Indian film conventions. It is an edge-of-the-seat thriller with a heart-touching message. There are no gross scenes and no mentally disturbing situations though this film deals the ubiquitous terror. ‘A Wednesday’ has an arresting plot and exceptionally good screenplay. The director Neeraj Pandey deserves a big round of applause. ‘A Wednesday’ is an engrossing and an entertaining thriller. Go and watch it!
